For the last 9 years, Alamo has organized a Veterans Day breakfast and invites any student who has a family member, or family friend who is a veteran, to join them for a special breakfast. Throughout the week, students across all grade levels work on special Veterans Day projects to make their welcome into the school extra special. There’s a special photo area and the PTO lines up a wonderful breakfast buffet.
“I love that we get to host our students’ special veteran(s) in their lives,” says Jamie Siegler, Alamo Special Education teacher who organizes the event. “I enjoy seeing all the veterans interact with each other.” The gym is decorated in red, white and blue and the tables are covered with handmade Thank You cards for guests to take home. It’s a packed event and this year was no different with 29 veterans attending the breakfast with their students.
It's a great lesson in history for the kids, as well, to see so many different generations and branches of the military represented.
